So I was on facebook when this man said that he was for civil unions, but against broadening the definition of the word “marriage” and this was my response back to him…
But step back and ask “who” defines marriage? Us? The white male Christian community? The gay community? The black community? You are making it seem like this word (along with thousands of words) is not allowed to be redefined, that we set this word in stone. Who says we can’t broaden definitions of words? Faggot used to mean a bundle of sticks, and then it became a slang for gay people. Sorry, but I disagree with the idea of just presenting “civil unions.” They (the gay community) wants to have a reception, and a nice wedding (maybe not in a church), and I think it is narrow to say they must settle for a “domestic partnership.” Will you domestic partnership me?
What was said back (by someone else, I might add) was “God defined it.”
SMH. I told myself not to even respond. That is a road I cannot go down, because people seem to forget that humans created language, not God, and if they believe that strongly in their religion then I am fighting a losing battle. Ugh. Why do people have to think so narrowly? Expand your mind, question everything you learn, even my Facebook rant. Let me know if you agree with me, disagree, or actually have an educated response back! And if you are Minnesotan, please, if you believe in the Constitution (Republicans, Democrats, and my favorite Independents), vote no on the Marriage amendment. Every constitution is about expanding and defending civil rights, not destroying them.
